“Dear Member. It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that xxxxx will cease trading on 29 February 2016.”
For someone walking the spiritual path, I was a little too excited by the news that my local gym was closing down.
My first thought wasn’t for someone’s dream that was being shattered and their heart broken. It wasn’t for the staff members who would soon be unemployed. And it wasn’t for its loyal members who depended on their support to live healthier, better lives. That came later.
No. My first thought was that I was being let off the hook!
No longer did I have to feel guilty about not taking the two-minute walk across the field in order to honour my commitment to a healthier me. “It’s not my fault I can’t exercise. The gym’s closing down!”
Well, then why haven’t I been there since November last year? Why haven’t I kept my commitment to a leaner, meaner me back in the day when it was still all my fault?
Sometimes, life stares you squarely in the face and challenges you to speak your truth. You can run but you can’t hide from these moments, and in that very moment, I came face to face with a lazy-ass couch potato who was making excuses for why her life wasn’t the way she wanted it to be.
And since I was being completely honest with myself, I had to admit that this pattern’s been popping up in other areas of my life as well.
But something amazing happens in these moments of truth, too. When you’re able to see the not-so-pretty picture of your present reality, you have the power to change it.
My favourite thing about the past is that it can happen in an instant. You don’t have to be the same person you were a second ago. You can tell a different story – the story of your life the way you want it to be. And who wants to be the story of a lazy-ass excuse-making couch potato?
So my new story is that I’m proactive, productive, and committed to a more toned me! I love taking part in activities that keep me fit while I have fun. I’m open to all opportunities that get me off the couch and into environments that promote an active, healthy lifestyle.
Now that’s a pretty picture. And as it turns out, there’s a dance school around the corner from where I live that I’ve been meaning to pop into. Cha-cha-cha, here I come!
It doesn’t end there. Why am I not blogging every day? Why have I not taken the art class I’ve bought all the pencils for? Why haven’t I visited my mother in such a long time?
Are you up for a challenge? What excuses do you have going on in your life right now? What’s been holding you back from living the resolutions you’ve made for this year? Say it out loud. Hear the ugly truth. Then rewrite the story the way you want it to be and get cracking on making it happen.
Remember: You don’t have to be the same person you were a second ago!
